Florida, three at a time

2027 Editions · 60 cities

Homes in Florida ask a lot of the people who work on them, and the rules change from one city line to the next. In each city we cover, our editors choose three businesses per trade and explain why.

Updated How we select

Before you hire in Florida

Four checks that always pay off

The same checks our editors make, in the order that saves you the most time.

  1. Check the state license, not just the website. Many trades need a state certification or a local registration. You can look up a contractor on the state’s license search in a minute.
  2. Permits are local.Your county or city building department issues the permit, and some cities add their own design review. A good contractor pulls the permit for you.
  3. Compare written quotes, like for like.Ask each company to price the same work and to list what is not included.
  4. Pay in stages.Tie payments to finished, inspected work, and ask for lien releases before the final payment.
